Major League Baseball Playoffs
The regular MLB season comes to an end around the first Sunday of October or the last Sunday of September. At this time the MLB playoffs start and eight teams enter into the post season. The eight teams that compete in the Major League Baseball playoffs consist of six division champions and two wild card teams. These two wild card teams are the clubs from each league with the best record outside of the divisional champions.
The divisional winners are seeded one through three depending on their season record. The wild card teams from each league are seeded number four regardless of their season record. It is usually common for the number one seed to play the number four seed and the number two seed to play the number three seed, unless the wild card team is from the same division as the one seed. If this is the case then the one seed will play the third seed and the second seed will play the wild card team or four seed. During the first and second rounds of the MLB playoffs, the better seeded team has home field advantage.
The playoffs start off with three rounds of series games that are played to determine a single league champion from each side which will then face off in the World Series. These first inner league playoff games consist of a best of five game series. After the first team of each league has been knocked out of the playoffs, the remaining to teams square off in what is known as the American League Championship Series and the National League Championship Series. These two league championships consist of the best of seven games.
In the event of a tie between two teams in the standings at the close of the regular season, Major League rules provide for a single game playoff to determine which of two teams will participate in the Division Series. Home field advantage for this single game is determined by a simple coin flip. If three teams are involved in a tie, a two game playoff may be played. If two teams are tied, but a tiebreaker would result in both participating in the Divisional Series anyway because one team is the divisional champion and the other team is the wild card, then no playoff is played and seedings are determined by head to head record.
The team belonging to the league that won the MLB All-Star Game receives home field advantage then in the World Series.
